Urban Flow, 2026
Urban Flow is a site-specific public artwork by Dasic Fernandez that transforms the ground plane into a dynamic visual system shaped by the movement of people through space. Inspired by natural growth patterns such as the layered textures of tree bark, the composition unfolds as a series of interconnected bands that expand, contract, and converge in response to the unique conditions of the site.
The artwork translates otherwise invisible pedestrian pathways into a vibrant network of color and form, creating a visual language that guides circulation while encouraging moments of pause and gathering. As the bands widen, they accommodate seating and other urban furnishings, seamlessly integrating functional elements into the overall composition. A carefully coordinated color palette reinforces these connections, creating a sense of harmony between the painted surface and the public amenities embedded within it.
At the heart of the installation, multiple bands intersect to create a focal point that anchors the space and establishes a clear spatial hierarchy. Through rhythm, movement, and color, Urban Flow enhances the legibility of the plaza while celebrating the patterns of everyday urban life.
By revealing the hidden currents that shape how people navigate and inhabit public space, Fernandez reimagines the plaza as a cohesive and active environment—one that reflects the energy, connectivity, and continual motion of Hudson Square.
