A round-up of recent animation restorations from the UCLA Film and Television Archive, funded by ASIFA-Hollywood (The Annie Awards), of 1920s, ’30s and ’40s cartoons released by some of Disney’s greatest rivals: New Yorkers Max Fleischer and Paul Terry, stop motion pioneer George Pal, and cult animator Richard (shouldn’t this be “Dick?”) Huemer (before becoming a major storyman for Disney). A lost Betty Boop cartoon, forgotten star character Toby the Pup, a stop-motion Superman, and a Pre-Code Farmer Alfalfa are among the many highlights. Introduced and curated by cartoon historian Jerry Beck, author of more than 15 books on animation history.
