Artist Open Call: Hudson Square Centennial Mural

November 5, 2026

The Hudson Square BID, in partnership with StorageMart (Manhattan Mini Storage), is seeking an artist team to design and install a large-scale mural at 131 Varick Street, celebrating 100 years of Hudson Square’s historic loft district.

Spanning the 176-foot-wide facade of a 1920s loft building at Spring and Varick Streets, the mural will be the most ambitious commission to date through Hudson Square Canvas, the BID’s public art program.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The mural will combine hand-painted artwork and printed graphics across the building’s lower facade, upper windows, and architectural details, creating a striking, site-responsive artwork that invites passersby to pause and look up.

The artwork will celebrate Hudson Square’s transformation from a bustling printing district into one of New York City’s leading creative and technology neighborhoods, while honoring the generations of people and industries that have shaped its identity.

We’re looking for an artist team with experience in both large-scale mural painting and graphic design for print production. We welcome original creative interpretations of the neighborhood’s centennial.
